15 million have had a near-death experience in the U.S.

ABC Anchor Bob Woodruff is not the only person who saw "a kind of whiteness" after leaving his body during his near-death experience in Iraq. In fact, the near-death experience happens to millions of people all over the world and today the experience can be both backed up and predicted by science. In December of 2001, a 13-year-long scientific study of near-death experiences in ten different hospitals was published in the international medical journal The Lancet. This prospective study revealed that 18% of patients suffering a cardiac arrest had a near-death experience.

78% of Americans believe in life after death

Nearly eight out of ten American believe in life after death. Moreover, those who have experienced near-death experiences confirm this belief, with studies showing that more than 90% are convinced that there is life after death. In fact, these near-death experiencers do not think of themselves as having been near death but rather in death.

90% believe in God or some higher power

Nine out of ten Americans firmly believe in God or some higher power and 46% have experienced God's presence or a spiritual force many times in their lives. People who have had near-death experiences have interpreted the experience as the direct confirmation that God, or such an ultimate reality does indeed exist. In fact, some researchers even suggest that religion has gained its inspiration from near-death experiences.
